Choosing Pathways to OA is dedicated to providing a positive, inclusive, harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, religion, technology choices, or political affiliation. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Sexual or discriminatory language and imagery are not appropriate for any event venue, including talks. Participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled at the discretion of the event organizers.

We are committed to modeling and encouraging the following anti-harassment behaviors:

  • Using welcoming and inclusive language
  • Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
  • Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
  • Focusing on what is best for the community
  • Showing empathy towards other community members

Harassing behavior includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verbal comments related to race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, religion, technology choices, or political affiliation
  • Sexual or discriminatory images in public spaces
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording
  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expelling the offender from the event.

Event organizers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.

We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues, event-related social activities, and on all event communication platforms.

Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of our event for everyone. We want you to be happy at this event.

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. You can make a report in person, in writing, or by phone call. If you or others are in imminent danger, please first call 911.

Direct contact information for individuals designated as points of contact will be shared with attendees closer to the forum dates.

When taking a personal report, we will ensure you are safe and cannot be overheard. We may involve other event staff to ensure your report is managed properly. Once safe, we’ll ask you to tell us about what happened. This can be upsetting, but we’ll handle it as respectfully as possible, and you can bring someone to support you. All reports and inquiries will be handled in confidence. You won’t be asked to confront anyone and we won’t tell anyone who you are.

We will also help you contact hotel/venue security, local law enforcement, local support services, provide escorts, or otherwise assist you to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your presence and participation.
